Once a legend, always a legend
From the likes of legendary trainer George Daldry, Abe ‘Mr Sin’ Saffron and tennis legend John Newcombe, there has never been a shortage of great names who have trodden the marble floor of the Lower Bar.
Marrying profound timber-clad columns with a high ceiling, in essence, this Sydney institution has changed little since its conception in 1924. It stands proudly as one of Sydney’s oldest art deco treasures and remains a thriving spot enjoyed by Members and guests alike.
The Lower Bar holds a special place in Sydney horseracing history. For many years, it was crowded on Mondays with bookmakers, great and small, brandishing large wads of banknotes to settle with each other over a few convivial drinks. Sadly, by the early 80s, fear of robbery and more sophisticated bookmaking processes turned these scenes into fond memories of a bygone era.
Painstakingly restored to its former glory in 2018, Lower Bar truly remains a unique setting where tradition reigns supreme.
