Our History

For over one hundred and twenty years, City Tattersalls Club has been an integral part of Sydney life and a destination for key city events.

1895 Founded by a group of 20 Bookmakers, City Tatts has grown to be one of the largest and most prestigious clubs in Australia.
1912 City Tattersalls Club becomes one of only a few clubs in the history of New South Wales to have its own Act of Parliament which gave it an operational freedom few other clubs could enjoy. The Club’s purpose designed building was opened in 1926 on the site of 198–200 Pitt Street located on the ground floor and in the basement of the famous Trocadero Café.
1960 The Club donated the City Tattersalls Ashes Cup to the winner of the tests between Australia and Great Britain. In 1928, Bert Hinkler aviator was honoured in the Club’s Lower Lounge to celebrate his epic solo fight from Britain to Australia. Shortly after, Amy Johnson the British aviatrix appeared in the open balcony of the first floor on 6 June 1930 to celebrate her completion of the epic solo flight from London to Darwin in 19 days, a feat which caused an excited crowd of Sydneysiders to block Pitt Street outside the Club to welcome her. Amy was presented with a gold life membership.
1960 City Tattersalls Club purchases the adjacent site at 196 Pitt Street and constructed a new building.
1963 The Club had the foresight to admit ladies as members to City Tattersalls Club.
1970 A heat of the Worlds Professional Snooker Championships in the Lower Lounge of the Club won by Eddie Charlton was televised nationally.
1975 City Tattersalls Club buys the adjacent site, 202-204 Pitt Street, from the former Tattersalls Club
1995 City Tattersalls Club celebrated a century of achievement.
